In the weeks leading up to the election in Tanzania, tensions grew after the opposition leader was jailed and charged with treason. His party withdrew, leaving President Mama Samia and a few independents to run. When results were announced last week—a 96.7% victory for Mama Samia—many citizens felt unheard. The result triggered widespread protests and riots across the country.
The government responded by cutting access to the internet, social media, and some phone lines. Businesses, shops, and schools have closed, and a dusk-to-dawn curfew has been enforced. Explosions, gunfire, and tear gas have been common—especially at night. Protestors have burned government buildings, and the military has responded with force.
