Purpose

Due to ongoing war and the resulting economic and social upheaval, opportunities exist for volunteer trauma counselors in Ukraine.  These events often leave individuals and communities grappling with intense psychological distress and trauma. Short-term trauma counselors provide immediate, focused support to help affected individuals stabilize and begin the healing process. Their presence is essential in mitigating the long-term psychological impact of traumatic events, offering coping strategies, and facilitating access to further mental health resources. By addressing acute emotional and psychological needs promptly, these counselors play a vital role in fostering resilience and recovery in communities facing crisis situations.

Skills

Volunteers must possess strong clinical expertise and/or education in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention, with the ability to provide immediate psychological first aid...  and to train others in how to do so. Cultural competence and sensitivity are crucial, given the diverse ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds in the region. Excellent communication and active listening skills are essential for building trust and rapport quickly with clients in distress. Counselors should also demonstrate empathy, patience, and emotional resilience to handle the intense emotional situations they will encounter. Flexibility and adaptability are necessary to respond effectively in unpredictable and often rapidly changing environments. Additionally, skills in collaboration and coordination with other healthcare providers, NGOs, and community organizations are important to ensure a comprehensive support system for those in need.
