Working with Detained Refugees in Bangkok

Working with Detained Refugees in Bangkok

PAOC global workers, Matthew & Amber, not only serve ChildCARE Plus children and communities in Thailand and the local church in Bangkok while raising four children overseas, but increasingly God is calling them into work with refugees in detention.

In response to the need, Matthew & Amber help urban refugees by advocating for their bail from detention, providing vocational skill training and resettlement opportunities, and networking with local agencies.

Powerful moments are happening in the ESL program for Rohingya detainees. Matthew & Amber’s oldest child was given special permission to teach the children as part of his schooling. Such a rare and meaningful experience!

The graduation ceremony for 168 youth detainees who completed the 3-month ESL course was a huge highlight. For many, it was the first certificate they had ever received. Leaders from Immigration, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) attended. These relationships matter. They help keep the program going and bring hope to those who need it most.

PRAY for God’s mercy on the most vulnerable in Thailand and globally, those displaced by war and persecution.

PRAY for those Matthew & Amber know by name, that they will find safety physically and hope in a growing relationship with Jesus.

PRAY the Spirit of God will empower Matthew & Amber, and all global workers serving refugees globally, to see breakthrough, maintain hope and find grace in the sharing the burdens of others.

World Refugee Day is June 20th with World Refugee Sunday, June 21, 2026. It is a good opportunity for churches to pray for and champion those in refugee communities or resettled to Canada.
